Free RBT Data Collection and Graphing Quiz (Domain A, Task List 3.0)

Passing the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) exam requires a solid understanding of how to measure behavior. Whether you are studying for the upcoming 3rd Edition Task List, Data Collection (Domain A) is one of the most critical sections of the test.

In Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), we don’t just guess if a behavior is improving; we rely on data. This guide covers the essential measurement concepts you need to know and includes a free interactive practice exam to test your knowledge.

RBT Domain A: Data Collection

This exam focuses on Domain A: Measurement, Graphing, and Data Collection procedures. Essential for the RBT 2nd and 3rd Edition exams.

Assessment Objective:

  • 25 Questions on Measurement
  • Focus on Continuous vs. Discontinuous Data
  • Passing requirement: 80%

What is RBT Domain A?

Domain A focuses on Measurement. As an RBT, your primary role during a session is to collect accurate data while delivering therapy. If your data is wrong, the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) cannot make the right decisions for the client.

To pass this section, you must understand the difference between Continuous and Discontinuous measurement.

Continuous Measurement Procedures

Continuous measurement records every single instance of a behavior during the observation period. These are the most accurate methods.

  • Frequency: Simply counting how many times a behavior happens (e.g., “The client tapped the table 5 times”).
  • Rate: Frequency combined with time. It tells you how often something happens per time unit (e.g., “5 taps per minute“).
  • Duration: How long a behavior lasts from start to finish (e.g., “The tantrum lasted 10 minutes”).
  • Latency: The time between the instruction (SD) and the start of the response (e.g., You say “Sit down,” and it takes the client 5 seconds to start sitting).
  • Inter-Response Time (IRT): The time between two successive responses (e.g., The time between one scream stopping and the next scream starting).

Discontinuous Measurement Procedures

Sometimes, it is impossible to watch a client every second of the day. In these cases, we use discontinuous measurement, which captures a sample of behavior using time intervals.

  • Partial Interval Recording: Did the behavior happen at any time during the interval? (Overestimates behavior; good for behavior you want to decrease).
  • Whole Interval Recording: Did the behavior happen for the entire interval? (Underestimates behavior; good for behavior you want to increase).
  • Momentary Time Sampling: Is the behavior happening at the exact moment the interval ends?

Graphing and Data Entry

Collecting data is only the first step. You must also know how to plot it visually.

  • X-Axis (Horizontal): Represents time (Sessions, Days, Dates).
  • Y-Axis (Vertical): Represents the behavior measure (Frequency, Duration, etc.).
  • Trend: The overall direction of the data path (Ascending, Descending, or Stable).

Free RBT Practice Quiz: Data Collection

Are you ready to test your knowledge? We have created a specialized 25-question mock exam focusing strictly on Measurement and Data Collection.

This quiz covers:

  • Real-world scenarios.
  • Distinctions between Frequency, Rate, and Duration.
  • Graphing basics.
  • Instant feedback with detailed rationales.

Tips for Passing the RBT Exam

  1. Read the Explanations: In the quiz above, pay attention to the “Rationale” provided for every answer. Understanding why an answer is correct is better than memorizing the question.
  2. Think Objectively: Always choose the answer that relies on what you can see and measure, not on what you feel the client is thinking.
  3. Practice Definitions: Ensure you can explain the difference between Latency (time until start) and IRT (time between behaviors) without hesitating.
